THE VICTORY OF INDRAJIT: Indrajit was the son of Ravana by the name of Meghanada. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva who taught him the art of Samadhi, the art of invisibility. A fierce battle ensued between Ravan and Indra when Meghanada resorted to the art of invisibility and vanquished Jayanta. Thereafter, Indra was on the verge of defeating Ravana when Meghanada yet again resorted to the art of invisibility and bound Indra thereby defeating him.

Indra was taken hostage to Lanka along with all this prized possessions as spoils of war. Lord Brahma thereafter intervened and secured the release of Indra in exchange for conferring a boon upon Meghanada and conferring upon him the title of ‘Indrajit’.

This print from the Ravi Varma Press derived from a painting by Raja Ravi Varma depicts the triumph of Meghanada who proudly displays and presents his spoils of war including an apsara, Suchi to Ravana. This print is from a painting at the Jaganmohan Palace at Mysore.
