View of Bakewell from the River Wye

Bakewell is an old market town in Derbyshire where Monday has been market day since at least 1330. The town is the home of the famous Bakewell Pudding. It is believed that Bakewell was the model for the village of Lambton in 'Pride and Prejudice'; Jane Austen visited Bakewell in 1811, and it was here that she revised her manuscript, introducing Derbyshire into the novel.

The view on this postcard is looking across Granby Croft towards the Methodist Chapel on Matlock Street, taken from the top of the Recreation Ground. It was possibly painted from Smith's Island. At that time there were allotments at Granby Croft; since then housing has blocked the view of the Methodist Chapel. The old buildings on the right were on what became the market place, but is now housing.
