Mt. Kunô in eastern Shizuoka city was the first gravesite of the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. This painting depicts a scene of the approach to the Tôshôgû Shrine located at the top of the mountain. While renowned for his bird and flower paintings, Chinzan also created true-view sketches from his actual observation of the places he visited, as did his teacher Watanabe Kazan. This painting was created from sketches taken ten years prior upon a visit to Mt. Kunô. The trees and hill are drawn in literati fashion, while the shadowing applied to bamboo fence and stone wall gives a sense of three-dimensionality to the work. The gentle color tones with their translucent feel are reminiscent of Chinzan's bird and flower painting style.
