View of the city of Betulia

Corrado de Mochis1549/1557

Veneranda Fabbrica del Duomo di Milano
Milano, Italy

The panel depicts a view of Bethulia, a city in Palestine and scene of the famous biblical episode in which Judith kills Holofernes: in fact, the work comes from Milan Duomo's stained-glass window V21, dedicated to the stories from the Old Testament. It was made by Corrado de Mochis from Cologne, presumably based on a cartoon by Giuseppe Arcimboldi, who was active on the Cathedral's worksite at the time. The work currently on display in the stained-glass windows room in Duomo Museum.
