View of the Town Hall Square

Theodor Gehlhaarc 1827

Tallinn City Museum

Tallinn City Museum
Tallinn, Estonia

The main square of the town – the Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats) – can be seen on many images, but unfortunately, the oldest paintings date back only the 19th century. This view, painted in the beginning of the 19th century, is one of the oldest and besides the ancient medieval town hall. It also depicts everyday life – after all, the town square was used as the marketplace for hundreds of years. Detail has been put into depicting the buildings surrounding the square, many of which make the painting look hundreds of years older due to their medieval high gable ends.
