Portrait of Villa-Lobos, front, with long-sleeved shirt, in light, light blue fabric, buttoned at the front; landscape in the background. The canvas was painted in the context of the assembly of the carnival block Sôdade do Cordão, an initiative developed within the scope of a musical education program coordinated by Villa-Lobos in the 1930s and 1940s. The assembly of this carnival block, along the lines of strings proscribed by the Rio police in the first decade of the twentieth century, mobilized different artistic languages such as music, dance, plastic arts and brought the two artists together. The decorative elements - masks and banners - and the studies of costumes for Sôdade do Cordão were carried out by Maria Margarida Soutello, Di Cavalcanti and Ismailovitch.
