This piece is part of a cycle dedicated to the life of Saint Bruno, which Friar Manuel Bayeu painted when he was living at the Nuestra Señora de la Fuentes Carthusian monastery. The 17 works that are currently kept in the Huesca Museum were acquired during the Spanish government's seizure of church property in the desamortización, or Spanish confiscation, in 1835. A self-portrait of Bayeu, with his Carthusian habit and artist's palette, is visible in this painting. He is the only person looking toward the viewer.
