The Ginkgo Biloba is considered the oldest plant species in the planet. The existing specimen in the Virtudes garden is the largest of the species known in Portugal, with 35.5 meters high, and probably the oldest. It is estimated that the tree is approximately 200 years old, therefore preceding the Nursery Garden itself. This icon in the Virtudes garden, the only tree here to be recognized as of Public Interest, is one of the only survivors of the original nursery. There is also a Palm Tree and a Chorisia Speciosa, a rare tree in Portugal which is currently in the process of being recognized.
