During the 19th century, the façades were greatly simplified and many of the ornamental motifs disappeared. On the other hand, linings with polychrome tiles, especially red, green, brown, yellow, blue and purple, started to appear. The repetition of patterns and the azulejo coatings gave the walls a brightness and an ennoblement of its own, altogether with the masonry applied to span frames. Wood, mostly chestnut, oak and, in some cases, Riga pine, was used for the framing of the houses and the structure of the roofs. Portuguese pine was used in partition structures and coatings, as well as exterior and interior floors and window frames.
