This 15th-century panel depicts the episode of the Visitation, narrated in the Gospel of Luke: Mary is visiting her cousin Elizabeth after having received the announcement of the birth of Jesus from the angel. The two figures draw close to one another, captured by the artist in the act of hugging. Before being moved into the exhibition rooms of the Milan Duomo Museum, where it is currently held, the panel was placed in stained-glass window V01, from there it was removed in 1958 for the exhibition "Lombard Art from the Visconti to the Sforza". Recent restoration has restored full legibility to the work, which was most likely originally conceived to be used in large apse window V19 dedicated to the New Testament.
