The front legs of the booth will be Fannie Lou Hamer’s height: 5 feet 4 inches. Two tape-measures will be attached to the front legs of the voting booth. They will be extended to the 5’ 4” length. On the tapes will be the “…fully prepared…” quote mentioned above. The booth will lean, as if to fall forward. The voting booth will look precarious, not only because it leans forward, but it will also seem fragile. It’s thin, spindly legs will look barely able to hold the weight of its task. This, because the voting rights of every U.S. citizen still remain precarious and fragile. Voter identification laws, voter registration restrictions, district gerrymandering, interference by foreign powers, and various manipulations at local polling places continue to threaten this very basic right. Were Fannie Lou Hamer still alive today, you can be certain she would be fully prepared “…to fall five feet, four inches forward in the fight…” for everyone’s rights!
