The WACA redevelopment master plan continued with the installation of six 70-metre light towers. The $4 million project was financed by the State Government and unveiled on the 10 October 1986. To celebrate, two sporting events were played under the new lights: a gaelic football match between Australia and Ireland (a Gaelic Football Test was later played 17 November 1990) and a McDonald's Cup match between Western Australia and Victoria.
