Wall of light Blue

Sean Scully1999 - 1999

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
Birmingham, United Kingdom

Sean Scully is considered to be one of the most significant abstract painters working today. His paintings are often large and monumental and can be viewed as part of an abstract minimalist tradition developing from Mondrian and Rothko.
Wall of light is the title given to a series of work begun in 1984. Scully travelled to Mexico the previous year and his fascination with the ruins, particularly in
the way the light struck and shadowed the stacked stones, spurred his ideas for the Wall of Light series.
Wall of light Blue, is one of the earliest in this series and one in which greater luminosity is suggested through the use of colour and texture. The rhythmic use of blue ‘bricks’ of colour gives the work what the artists has described as an ‘indoor-outdoor’ quality.
