Wall of the Five Windows of Winay Wayna

In this photograph, Chambi captures the ruins of Wiñay Huayna ('eternal youth' in the Quechua language), an Inca archaeological site southeast of Macchu Picchu. Its monumental ruins stand on the Inca trail leading to the famous citadel, between Intipunku and Puyupatamarca. Winay Wayna was built with large granite blocks on a hill overlooking the Urubamba valley, just like Macchu Picchu, which is on another peak, 200 m lower. The site includes houses, fountains and terraced agricultural areas. The wall with the five trapezoidal windows (a typical element of Inca architecture) is one of the most famous spots; Chambi photographed it in 1941.
