Mackmurdo designed a number of repoussé brass candle sconces for the Century Guild. This one features an oval shape with a sinuous floral pattern in low relief. Recalling a visit to ‘Whiteladies’, a building that became a cultural hub for the Century Guild, Mackmurdo’s architectural assistant from 1892 to 1897 Harry Sirr described how Mackmurdo’s interiors were ‘enhanced by lustre of his fitments, brass wall sconces and hanging candelabra, a long low mantel mirror with reflecting facets in richly gilded framework.’
