Phoebe Bown (c1770-1854) was well-known in the Matlock area of Derbyshire for her "eccentric" lifestyle. At a time when men and women wore very different clothes and everybody was expected to conform, she renounced female clothes and worked as a farmer, mason, tanner and cattle breeder.
