Watt and Shand was Lancaster’s landmark department store. Opened in 1879, it grew from a small dry goods retailer to a full-fledged department store in a matter of decades. With its prized location on Penn Square, it was the place to shop. Everything from clothes to fine china, as seen here in the 1930s, was on offer. When the store was bought by the Bon-Ton in 1992, Watt and Shand had held sway in Lancaster’s retail world for almost 115 years.
