"Welcome to Pittsburgh" features pieces from a collection of Pittsburgh images shot by Kenneth Neely over multiple years.
Welcome to Pittsburgh is a social documentary photography project showing Black Pittsburgh, and how life is here for many residents in low income areas: to have an idea of home, but to not have a sense of belonging.
I've been shooting images of Pittsburgh since 2003. I've had opportunities to work with others on Pittsburgh related projects, and have done work for some over the years. Last year I felt a need to capture more of what I saw important, and less of what others deemed important so I began my own project. I believe there is a lack of shared stories when it comes to the Black residents in my city. I believe there should be more coverage of the good things that happen in many of the low income and distressed areas. I wanted to begin creating images of the everyday people, the places, and the things that we should be concerned about. To create a body of work that represents the voiceless and shows the many others who make Pittsburgh what it is. To use the medium of photography to inspire and give hope, but to also begin a narrative of creating more good and changing what we do not like.
