Frosts could potentially damage seeds, though oftentimes the resulting grains are still of good quality. The only way to determine if a batch of seeds was damaged beyond acceptable levels was to conduct a growing test—something that most farmers were not equipped to do.
The CEF invited farmers to send samples of seeds that may have been damaged by frost, to be germinated in the greenhouses over the winter.
