It is a rare wintering bird in the classification of Gruidae. It is about 127 cm long, and the male and female are similar in shape. Their distinct red skin is exposed around the eyes. It is characterized by the gray color leading from the chest rising in a pointed V shape in front of the white neck. It lives in river estuaries, tidal flats, and wetlands, and feeds on grass seeds, grass roots, shellfish, and insects. They are very alert, and the whole flock prepares to fly with its neck and head up even at a slightest signal of intruders or shfits in their surroundings.
