Wilhelm Steinitz (1836-1900) born in Prague (then part of Austria, now the Czech Republic), was an Austrian-American chess player who became the first officially recognized World Chess Champion. He claimed the title in 1886 by defeating Johannes Zukertort and successfully defended it multiple times until 1894.
