President McKinley is portrayed seated upright in an upholstered armchair, turned slightly to the right. He is wearing the rosette of The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of The Unites States (MOLLUS) a fraternal organization for commissioned officers who fought for the Union Army and Navy during the American Civil War. President McKinley was a devoted member of this organization. This painting was created posthumously.
