Behind the big windmill three other ones recede into space. The dramatic colours of the sky range from deep blue on the right to flaming yellow on the left. Brueghel gives an early depiction of the cultured landscape of Flanders, where working people and the city in the back as a place of human culture stand out as the main landmarks – nature and culture in harmony with each other.
