Winifred Holtby

At the time of the bombardment of Scarborough, Winifred Holtby was a 16 year old pupil at the town's St Margaret’s School.

In 1918, Winifred joined the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps and went to France. After the war she studied at Somerville College, Oxford - where she is pictured in this photograph - and became a prolific and successful journalist, writing for many papers including the 'Manchester Guardian'. She was an ardent feminist, socialist and pacifist. She is perhaps best known and celebrated for her novels based on her experiences of the East Riding, notably her last novel, 'South Riding'. She died in 1935, aged 37.
