Nikola Tanev is a master of post-Impressionist landscape painting and also a painter of the modern city is a prominent figure in Modern Bulgarian art. Tanev left for France in his adolescence, in 1905. Between 1908 and 1912, he studied at the Academy of Decorative arts in Paris, excelling as a student and receiving numerous awards. He visited Claude Monet’s atelier in Giverny in the autumn of 1910. In 1912 he returned to Bulgaria and a year later he joined the Suvremenno Izkustvo (Modern Art) Association. The following years he had held solo exhibitions which established him as a landscape painter, drawing on post-Impressionism. After participating in the WWI, he co-founded the Rodno Izkustvo (Native Art) Association (1919). In 1927 he painted in the town of Karlovo for the first time, marking the beginning of his famous Karlovo period. He also painted numerous cityscapes of Sofia. Besides landscape paintings, he also painted still lifes and nudes.
