Norwich, United Kingdom

The first of its kind, this wire netting machine was invented and constructed by Charles Barnard in 1844 and used the principles of weaving looms, common in the city of Norwich, to create the metal netting. Charles Barnard founded the company which was to become Barnard, Bishops and Barnards Ltd by 1887. By this time James Bower had re-designed and re-built the netting machinery and had invented and patented a machine for creating mixed size mesh netting which produced the many thousands of miles sold to countries as far afield as Australia.
