Renaissance and Reformation. German Art in the Age of Dürer and Cranach

Influenced by Baldung’s paintings of witches, this composition shows several naked female figures of various ages and tousled hair. Their contorted bodies are elaborated with white heightening. Superstition of witches was a target of the humanists’ mockery, and at the same time the theme represented an opportunity to try out a broad spectrum of motifs and artistic styles.

  • Artist Biography: Around 1515 the Swiss painter Hans Franck was commissioned by the City of Basel to decorate the city gate and fountain as well as for murals in the town hall. In addition to a few paintings, numerous sketches for woodcuts survive by Franck. His works are characterized by a mannered line and a pronounced horror vacui.
