With an Eye to Embellishment, Vogue

Monsieur Georges Lepape, whose decorative drawings have appeared so frequently in Vogue, has turned his genius into other channels. For Rene Prou, he has designed a pair of chair-seats which, executed in Aubusson tapestry, were shown at the Salon d'Automne in Paris and are reproduced in the photograph just above. The patterns, each of which shows a primitive figure suggestive of the Bahamas against tropical foliage, are worked out in blue, brown, yellow, and green against a soft grey back- ground. The cartoon for the tapestry is shown at the upper right, while the chairs of gilded metal showing the completed tapestry are included in a grouping, by Rene Prou, about a bibelot-cabinet entirely covered with shagreen, with a blue mirrored base. These patterns, which could be adapted to fine needle-point, are an interesting application of modern design to old craftsmanship.
