Wonsam is a ceremonial robe that dates back to the mid-Joseon dynasty. It was originally made for the queen to wear at funerals, however, it later became the queen’s formal wear to small affairs, while women of nobility wore it for major events. It was also worn as a wedding robe for not only commoners, but also the daughters of the queen and royal concubines, who decorated it with badges embroidered with a nine-phoenix design on the back and chest.
