Belts like these were produced in Fez, in workshops largely staffed by men. They are composed of various patterns, arranged in two vertical strips, that draw on a variety of external sources. Among the models are medieval Spanish textiles, and architectural decoration and carpets from Persia. Fez belts were often worn with wedding dress and on other occasions thereafter.
