Woman's Head

Gustav Klimt1917

Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz

Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz
Linz, Austria

This small painting, which was found in the artist’s studio after his death in 1918, is one of his last works. It may be considered a successful example of elementary pictorial representation. The fact that the canvas remained unfinished contributes to its exquisite charm and makes it unique among Klimt’s many female portraits. Klimt’s Female Head appears timeless and alive. The “unfinished” aspect of the painting serves to enhance its expressivity, especially as far as the face is concerned. In her stark frontality the unknown sitter gives the impression of being aloof and self-confident at the same time. Klimt’s Female Head appears timeless and alive.
