Woman's Wedding Robe (Hwarot)

Hwarot is a bridal robe that was frequently worn for wedding ceremonies during the mid- to late Joseon Dynasty. Princesses wore hwarot for major ceremonies, while commoners were allowed to wear them only on their wedding day. Hwarot is made of deep bright red satin and embroidered with Chinese characters for longevity and good fortune. The main panels on the front and back are richly embroidered with designs including peonies, lotus flowers, waves, elixir grass, phoenix, butterflies, and children.
