Indian indigo, the dried out product of indigo plants, a plant native to India, has been popular since ancient times. As described by Akino, “The colors of indigo dyes from India and Africa are beautiful. I love the strength of the abstract design, imbued with religious meaning. I sketched a group of women wearing such cloth.” The systematic design of the abstract pattern and the elegant expression of the cloth bestow complex shadows upon the bodies of the women. Above all, the rhythmical arrangement of the arms of the women give the work a a lively, rhythmic feeling.
