Women voting in the Wyoming Territory

The full title of this 1888 engraving is "Woman suffrage in Wyoming Territory. — Scene at the polls in Cheyenne / from a photo." Beginning in 1869, Wyoming women could vote in all elections. The territory was the first to grant women suffrage to encourage them to move there. The law remained in effect through statehood, as Wyoming’s 1889 state constitution provided that the right to vote “shall not be denied or abridged on account of sex.”
