Petrus Plancius, born Pieter Platevoet in Flanders, was a minister in the Dutch Reformed Church who fled to Amsterdam in 1585. As a mathematician and cartographer, he became a consultant to the Dutch East India Company (VOC). He published a wall chart of the world and launched a globe of the world on the market. Like many scholars of his time he latinized his name.
