Yu Hi (1712-72), the painter of his hanging scroll was born as a son of “Totsuji” (Japanese-Chinese interpreter) in Nagasaki. His original name was “Kumashiro Hikonoshin), and “Yu Hi” was his Chinese-style name. He was also known as the only Japanese painter who studied directly under Shen Quan, a Chinese painter visiting Nagasaki from 1731 to 1733.
