- ALTA MODA: For its second exhibition since opening in July 2012, MATE presents a new, large body of work by its founder, Mario Testino. The exhibition Alta Moda – literally “high fashion” in Spanish – runs from 20th April until 15th September 2013. This series of photographic portraits of Peruvians wearing traditional and festive attire from the mountainous region of Cusco represents a bold departure for Testino from his work for fashion magazines. To create Alta Moda, Testino made several trips to Cusco city over a five-year period after discovering an archive of costumes from the region. Equally inspired by the history of Peruvian photography, Testino worked closely with Martin Chambi’s grandson and used a backdrop recreated from the archive of the late Peruvian photographer. While Alta Moda appears to reference the tradition of ethnographic photography, Testino has, in fact, captured several stories within each photograph. “I usually try to capture the moment” says Testino. “But with this series, I wanted to do something very different – not just with my own work but also with the practice of photography. I tried to fit as much time and history into each frame as possible – from the traditional and festive clothing to the Chambi backdrops to the Peruvian people in them. Alta Moda is quite different from the portraits I am perhaps best known for.” En su segunda exposición, desde su apertura en julio de 2012, MATE presenta un nuevo y vasto cuerpo de trabajo realizado por su fundador, Mario Testino. La exposición Alta Moda –literalmente “moda de altura” en español— va del 20 de abril al 15 de setiembre de 2013. Esta serie de retratos fotográficos de peruanos vestidos con trajes tradicionales, cotidianos y festivos, de la región montañosa de Cusco, representa un cambio audaz de Testino, en lo que respecta a su trabajo para revistas de moda. Para crear Alta Moda, Mario Testino hizo varios viajes a la ciudad del Cusco a lo largo de cinco años, luego de descubrir un archivo de vestidos de la región. Igualmente inspirado en la historia de la fotografía peruana, Testino trabajó junto con el nieto del difunto fotógrafo peruano Martín Chambi y utilizó un telón de fondo recreado por el Archivo Martín Chambi, inspirado en el que usó en el pasado el famoso fotógrafo peruano. Alta Moda parece hacer referencia a la tradición de la fotografía etnográfica, y Mario Testino, de hecho, ha conseguido capturar varias historias en cada una de sus fotografías. “Normalmente trato de capturar el momento”, dice Testino. “Pero con esta serie de fotografías quería hacer algo muy diferente – no solo con mi propio trabajo, sino también con la práctica de la fotografía. Intenté acumular la mayor cantidad de tiempo e historia posibles en cada encuadre – desde los trajes tradicionales y festivos y el telón de fondo de Chambi, hasta la historia del mismo pueblo peruano. Alta Moda es ciertamente diferente de los retratos por los que soy quizás, más conocido”.
