In the Western Han dynasty, Yangguan was a military command post. It became Yangguan County during the Wei and Jin Dynasties and later Shouchang County during the Tang Dynasty. However, after the Silk Road declined in the Song and Yuan Dynasties, Yangguan gradually fell into ruins.
