The first wave of yellow-flowered magnolias created by hybridizing the native cucumber tree (Magnolia acuminata) with M. denudata, 'Elizabeth' was selected and named by the Brooklyn Botanical Garden in 1977. Its large yellow flowers emerge later than saucer and star magnolias and thus are less likely to be damaged by late frosts.
