This book written by Bak Ji-won (a.k.a. Yeonam, 1737-1805) in 1780 after his visit to Qing presents his knowledge of the political, cultural, economic and other aspects of Chinese society under the rule of the Manchus, and contains essays about his friendship with men of letters and other notable figures of the Qing Dynasty. As one of the key figures in the School of Northern Learning (Bukhakpa), along with Hong Dae-yong (1731-1783) and Bak Je-ga (1750-1805), Bak Ji-won stressed the importance of adopting the cultures and systems of advanced foreign countries.
