Flying shuttle for weaving damask

Made by J. McCumiskey, Lisburn, this shuttle was used to pass the weft yarn through the warp thread, allowing cloth to be woven. In Ireland, long after the invention of the flying shuttle in 1733, weavers continued to thrown the shuttle by hand, but by the early nineteenth century most handloom weavers had switched to the much faster flying shuttle.
