It is a big river that flows through southern Africa to the Indian Ocean. Because it was undeveloped and unexplored, Africa was called “The Dark Continent Ein the 19th century. The first efforts to map the inland relied on sailing up rivers to their sources. Early explorers found the going difficult because of tropical diseases and wild beasts. The Zambezi River was especially dangerous due to the six meter long Nile Crocodiles lurking between its banks.

  • 作品解説 / Object Note (Japanese): ザンベジ川はアフリカ南部を流れインド洋に注ぐ大河です。19世紀、暗黒大陸と呼ばれていたアフリカの内陸はまだ未開の地でした。内陸部の地図を作る為には大河の水源と流路を確認することから始めなければなりませんでしたが、様々な病気や野生動物など探検は困難を極めました。特にザンベジ川は体長6mに達するナイルワニが多く生息する危険な川でした。1855年、宣教師・探検家であるリヴィングストンは、このザンベジ川中流で『ヴィクトリア瀑布』を発見しました。
