Zodiac
Colour lithograph, 1896
Featuring the striking profile of a majestic woman against a prominent halo, this design was originally made as a company calendar for Champenois for the year 1897. The theme—the harmonious working of the universe—is reflected in the twelve signs of the zodiac, which are incorporated in the circular band with decorative motifs featuring hexagrams—mystic symbols frequently appearing in Mucha’s designs. The distribution rights of this design were soon bought by Léon Deschamps who sold it under the name of his magazine La Plume as a calender and a decorative panel as shown here.
