National Coach Museum
Lisbon, Portugal

Travel vehicle brought from Madrid by King Filipe II (III of Spain) during his visit to Portugal in 1619. It is the oldest coach in the Museum's collection.

Its body is open and lined in black leather with gilt tacks and glass panes hanging from straps. The hood is upheld by four columns. The interior is upholstered in red embroidered velvet on a yellow background. As the coach was intended for long journeys, the seat pillows hide a very useful toilet system. Over the front wheel is a chest to store utensils. The wheel axels are connected by a single wooden shaft underneath the wheels. The front wheels, which remain too large and connected to axels, make this coach difficult to manoeuvre.
