The big wheel which was part of Firestone Lantern Club’s lantern depicting a funfair. It was built under the direction of Magnus Webber, a railway mechanic, who had seen Bavarian funfairs whilst studying in Germany. He had the knowledge and skill to design the ‘heavy mechanism’ (comprising various combinations of iron shafts, ratchets, nuts, bolts and welded plates) required to operate the large structures on the lantern. In 1993 Firestone members used the same technology they had learnt from him.
