‘Say No to Domestic Violence Knit Bomb’ - Yarn-Bombed Street Trees

This photograph shows a street lined with trees that have been covered with embroidered patches of colourful designs. The type of artwork depicted is known as ‘yarn-bombing,’ a form of the growing craftivism movement. Craftivism is another form of activism that includes themes of feminism, environmentalism, anti-capitalism and solidarity within domestic crafts such as knitting, yarn-work and cross-stitching. The row of trees in the image are wrapped in bright knitted patches which have been tagged by Zonta International, a service organisation that focuses on empowering women. This photography was taken by UNSW criminologist A/Prof. Alyce McGovern in a series of photos titled ‘Say No to Domestic Violence Knit Bombs’ displayed near the Blacktown City Council.
