..."Na Zachod!" -"On to the West" - reads the sign on the railroad car in which these Polish Jews were repatriated from the Soviet Union. Approximately 140,000 Polish Jews who were evacuated to the Soviet Union in 1939 returned to Poland, most of them to Silesia, where the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (“the Joint”) in cooperation with the Central Jewish Committee of Poland inaugurated extensive relief and rehabilitation programs.
