The eponymous hero of “The Return of Odysseus” (performed by Tadeusz Brzozowski) was a German soldier, returning from the eastern front by Stalingrad, wearing a muddy uniform and a helmet. The “Parademarsch”, which could be heard at the beginning of the performance, was soon replaced by German wartime announcements and the sound of a machine gun. On the door to the room in which the play was performed, Kantor wrote these meaningful words: “You don’t enter the theatre with impunity.” They further intensified the genuine threat of death as Germans could enter the flat that served the function of the stage any moment.
