Ritual robes are the most official and grandest apparel worn by high-achieving Taoists on important occasions such as offering sacrifices, etc. Tough in a simple silhouette, this kind of apparel is usually extremely embellished, with the most part covered with ingeniously-designed exquisite embroidered motifs, making it an epitome of ancient Chinese garments.
With a length of 150cm and width of 145cm, this ritual robe has a straight crossed collar, a vertical placket, broad sleeves and draping laps. It applied brick-red plain satin as the outer fabric and light yellow satin with hidden floral patterns for lining. As for embellishment for the hem, there are, from the inner to the outer, yellow satin strips with hidden floral patterns and black satin tapes with gold couching embroidered motifs.
As an embodiment of the Taoist spirituals principles, the ritual robes of Taoism are often decorated with patterns based on the immortal world depicted by the Taoism scripture, as shown by the gold or silver couching embroidered patterns of Taoist meanings on the main body and hem of this robe. This garment is one of the best housed by this museum.
