If the artist wishes to preserve the original drawing from the damage caused by this direct method of tracing, a second drawing may be made using ‘tracing paper’ to record the main outlines of the original work. The tracing paper version is then lightly rubbed on the back with a soft pencil or coloured chalk and its outlines are then transferred to the new support. A tracing taken from an original drawing can also be used to enlarge or reduce the design by squaring up or to reverse the image by turning it over and redrawing it from behind. This is usually done by holding the sheet up to the light and laying it flat against a transparent surface, such as a pane of glass.
